What would it be like to lose control over choices such as who to love? Or even whom to marry? It’s a world many of us are curious about and wonder how do those held together by traditions that choose one’s fate, fair in the end. Author Jyotsna Ramani’s Shattered Dreams pulls us into the world of arranged marriages where emotions run high and respect for family and culture is honored. The main character Radha is immediately memorable, sharing with us the reader her passion and dreams. Is her fashion design career important enough to her family and what will she do about her impending marriage? Shattered Dreams is written full of heart-felt emotion, personal drama that gently questions her family traditions and ultimately asking the reader to decide is tradition more important than personal choice?  Freedom to choose in love and life, well that is but one of life’s many questions Radha will face.

Author O.K. Johnson’s book, The Shift is an autobiographical recount of his life’s journey through spiritual awakening and re-growth. He steps through the doors into his spiritual life initially led by others and ultimately through shared and self-guidance located the true course for himself and the way to move his beliefs from tradition-based Roman Catholicism to have a bible-based personal faith in Jesus Christ. His book isn’t a simple recount of his faith, it’s meant for readers who may themselves question a belief they were born into and provide the steps he took while grappling with inner query.  Johnson’s tone in The Shift, is meant to inspire and embrace his readers, wrapping them in the bosom of their belief and letting them know questioning is okay, because in the end he found resolution. Horror fans will revel in the deep tones of suspense and tunnel through the creepy labyrinth author Rogue Jones has created in his book Harper’s Haunt. This book is exactly what thrillers are made of, a little love and crazy intertwined to keep his readers guessing, Rogue Jones balances what is real and what isn’t. Is the story opening in reality or a figment of Travis’s imagination? And what does his girl Harper have to do with this, if anything at all? I like the questions the author poses to his reader’s through the main characters voice and the fast paced writing style that keeps ones’ eyes on the page and mind tingling in anticipation with every turn of Rogue Jones’s Harper’s Haunt. The ending well, let me say is full of surprise and worth reading cover to cover.

This author reminds me of an artist, full of eclectic spontaneity and word whimsy.  C.A. Mullins Day Drunk Blues: A Memoir in G (Part 1) has charming typed pages, rudimentary drawings and parallel prose interwoven with poetic interludes encouraging the reader to take pause, indulge in the words, understand the characters and relate. Frank terms are used as his poems touch topics of romance, love, humor, lust, history and how it plays a part in all of our lives, the ordinary and extraordinary. Many stories are told in this book Day Drunk Blues: A Memoir in G (Part 1) by C. A. Mullins so read carefully, much is said and left unsaid. I look forward to reading the next part; this is a story for people who like quirky, ironic, thought provoking and surprising reads. Most of all real life and how everyday living can be humorous and numbing.
